Special Programs
ACK will hold two special exhibitions: one at Kyoto International Conference Center and one online.
Beyond Kyoto
Extending beyond the framework of Kyoto Meeting, one of the main programs of ACK introducing artists closely connected to Kyoto, special exhibitions will be held of artists with connections to Kyoto, including on the outer walls of exhibition booths, free spaces and in the Hosho-an Tea House at the venue. This involves support from not only collaborating businesses and galleries but also Alternative Kyoto 2021 (the art festival organized by Kyoto Prefecture), and will offer the chance to experience today’s contemporary art from Kyoto.
Venue & Artist
Event Hall: Teppei Kaneuji × Chihiro Mori, Side Core, Koki Tanaka, Hyslom and Tatsuo Miyajima
Hosho-an Tea House: Teppei Kaneuji, Side Core and Satoshi Someya
Artist Profiles
- Teppei Kaneuji × Chihiro Mori
Chihiro Mori creates artworks from fragments found from exploring cities with her own unique perspective, and Teppei Kaneuji creates work using a context-reinterpreting collage technique with cut out parts of his own personal belongings to use as materials.
This is the first exhibition of collaborative work made between the two artists through a liberal pairing of media and images. Pure gold pieces made by Kaneuji in cooperation with SGC will be re-exhibited in the Hosho-an Tea House.
Teppei Kaneuji: Born in Kyoto in 1978. Completed the master’s course at Kyoto City University of Arts. Is currently an Associate Professor at the same university.
Chihiro Mori: Born in Osaka in 1978. Completed the master’s course at Kyoto City University of Arts. Part-time faculty at the same university.
- Side Core/Everyday Holiday Squad
Side Core
Initiated by Sakie Takasu and Tohru Matsushita in 2021. With Taishi Nishihiro joining in 2017, the group became involved in the Kyotango City project in 2018. SIDE CORE develops projects under the theme of generating background noise from research they conduct in different localities. The group swaps opinions and ideas throughout the project from a street-culture perspective, and creates work that draws attention to the locality of public spaces.
Everyday Holiday Squad
An anonymous artist group working with SIDE CORE since 2015.
- Satoshi Someya
Satoshi Someya was born in Tokyo in 1983. After completing his graduate study in the doctoral program at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2014, he has continued to work as an artist in Kyoto. Devoting himself to ornamentation in Japanese urushi lacquerware, he reinterprets techniques and designs of kashoku (decorations) to decorate surfaces as decorative actions and readings in a broader sense, and with this in mind he creates works. His latest exhibition will take place in the Hosho-an tearoom at Kyoto International Conference Center, and features artworks that share discoveries in daily life with viewers through an idea of “play”.
- Koki Tanaka
Koki Tanaka was born in 1975. He completed the master’s course at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2005. After studying in Los Angeles as part of the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists in 2009, he has continued to work as an artist in Kyoto. He has an interest in and develops work that focuses on people cooperating, relationships, personal transformations, and the memories arising from people building things together. He visualises the multiple contexts lurking in simple, everyday acts, through movies, installations and writing.
- Hyslom (Itaru Kato, Fuminori Hoshino, Yuu Yoshida)
Since starting their activities in 2009, Hyslom has been a film, photography and performance work of ‘field play’, a game about the encounters and strange feelings had with people and things found exploring urban areas by actually physically going there. In addition, these memories are often made into sculpture, plays or film works. In Ayabe City they held an online bus tour visiting different kamamoto potters.
- Tatsuo Miyajima
Tatsuo Miyajima was born in Tokyo in 1957. Completed the master’ s course at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1986. Served as vice-president of Kyoto University of the Arts from 2012 to 2016. Has exhibited many works of art, including installations using digital LED counters and other 3D works, all of which are grounded in the concept that everything keeps changing, is connected with everything else, and continues forever. His work has viewers wondering at the cycle of life and death; a universal issue that affects us all.
