Gallery Out of Place
Gallery OUT of PLACE opened in the spring of 2005 in Nara City and is a contemporary art gallery that regularly presents artists from Japan and abroad.
I lived in France from 1992 to 1999. During that time I travelled around Europe, North and Central America, Australia, Africa and Asia.
I also spent a year in Paris in 2003, learning how to run an art gallery.
I wanted to deepen the fascination of art in Japan that I had developed through meeting and interacting with so many people involved in the art world there.
We hope to introduce up-and-coming artists, as well as talented artists expressing deep philosophies and ideas, and to bring a strong impact and enriching time to the viewers. The gallery’s name, OUT of PLACE, is derived from Edward Said’s autobiography of the same name. We want to emulate Said’s idea that it is those who have no sense of belonging anywhere who can create new paths and new values, and aim to develop local originality while keeping up with international standards.
