Tomio Koyama Gallery collaborates with Fergus McCaffrey to present a selection of works by Marcia Hafif, Richard Nonas and Kishio Suga.
Marcia Hafif (b. California, 1929–2018) initiated her exploration of painting at a time when the validity of such practice was in question. For over 5 decades she presented paintings and drawings in series that addressed the conceptual and physical elements of work: process, medium, shape, color, time and space.
Richard Nonas (b. New York, 1936–2021) developed a body of sculpture that engaged with the perception of space, place, and time. Using materials that operate in the interstices between nature and culture, he often reiterated his sculptural arrangements using different materials, such as wood, steel, and stone. Kishio Suga (b. Morioka, Iwate, Japan, 1944) currently lives and works in Ito, Shizuoka. Suga is a central member of the art movement Mono-ha that took place from the late 1960s to the 1970s, and has continued to develop his own distinct practice as one of the leading figures in Postwar Japanese art. He engages in various approaches concerning the relationships between “things” such as stones, trees, metals, and that of space, based on his unique philosophy that resonates with Eastern thoughts like Indian philosophy. In doing so, he produces works that are themselves manifestations of the profound presence harbored within “things.”
